Mark is a husband and father: Among my greatest joys in life is time shared with my wife, Kay, and two daughters, Melanie & Holly. There is no greater engine for self-discovery and growth than through close family relationships. Parents will identify with the many ways in which parent-child relationships challenge the very core of who we are. Mark was a software engineer*: Long ago, and in a galaxy far, far away, I graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (BS/EECS) from UC Berkeley. I went on to create many popular video and computer games, first as a programmer, then as a software team leader, and eventually as a cross-functional team leader and departmental manager with dozens of concurrently running projects. My experience in software development taught me about the dynamics (both effective and not) of managing and working cooperatively on complex projects within teams. As a coach, I find that many clients struggle at achieving the kind of results with their team(s) that companies have come to expect. With the increased complexities that go with outsourcing, especially shared technology development efforts across time zones and continents, team management and motivation has become among the most difficult work challenges my clients face. Mark is also: A musician (classical guitar), an exercise enthusaist (mountain biking, hiking, running, swimming, skiing), a cook and, of course, much more. But what’s most important for you to know about me is that I listen well, and honestly reflect back what I hear. Based upon my life experience, my ears may be more attuned to hearing what others might miss, but that can be as much a bias as a benefit. So I offer all this background with the pledge that my coaching is all about you: Your experience, your intuition, and your life purpose. I don’t seek to be “right”, whatever that means. I seek to help you find what’s right for you. My insights may be helpful, but your own answers to my simple, powerful questions are where the most valuable learning happens. Cheers, *I continue to enjoy programming as a hobby. ClubScheduler is one hobby project that has grown to serve more than 2000 Toastmasters clubs around the world. Mark is a professional coach: I'm a graduate of the renowned Coaches Training Institute (CTI), the first program for coaches accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF). In business, my experience includes 25 years of consulting, entrepreneurship, team leadership, and business management in both small and mid-sized companies. I co-founded and managed a successful game software development company (ToeJam & Earl Productions), served as Sr. Producer at a major publisher of computer and video games (Electronic Arts), and served as VP of Production Studios for a major educational software and toy manufacturer (LeapFrog Enterprises). I have also served as president of Tamalpais Toastmasters, and sponsored and mentored the newly chartered SpeakFrog Toastmasters at LeapFrog. And I recently completed CTI’s Leadership Program, a 10-month intensive course in Co-Active Leadership.
Marriage, life and business partnerships do so as well, and often to an even greater degree. Being a husband, father, and 13-year business partner has taught me to see relationships through the lens of taking personal responsibility, as opposed to that of being a victim. I use this perspective to help guide clients to seek their position of power, and to be intentional about the impact they desire to have in all relationships, whether at home or at work.
